Libraries Not Open As Much

WINNIPEG - A new report says libraries in Winnipeg are, on average, open fewer hours than those in other cities like Regina, Edmonton and Hamilton.

The public service report says it is in part due to a policy that dates back to the 1960s which keeps most branches closed on Saturdays.

Many libraries are also closed on Wednesdays and there are fewer summer hours than in the winter which the report calls confusing and a source of constant complaints.

It suggests the city add the equivalent of a dozen fulltime positions to the library system and spend an extra $2 million dollars next year in an effort to have longer and more consistent year-round hours.
