New Winnipeg Totem Pole

New Totem Pole

WINNIPEG - Visitors to Assiniboine Park can now learn more about the history of residential schools.

A new totem pole, gifted to the Southern Chiefs' Organization, has gone up in the park.

The Residential School Totem Pole, by Kwakiutl artist Charles Joseph, tells the story of how he was taken away from his family as a child and forced into a residential school.

The pole will eventually be on display in the old Hudson's Bay in downtown Winnipeg as part of the building’s renovation.
