Man Wanted Police to Shoot Him

WINNIPEG - A 34-year-old man wielding a machete and taunting officers wanted police to shoot him.

Friday morning Tactical Team members responded to a report of a man distressed and armed with a machete outside a home in the Robertson neighbourhood.

The man, who is believed to have been coming off the use of methamphetamine, had made specific plans to attack police and force them to shoot him. Police said the man even made a makeshift shield designed to prevent a “Taser”, taped large machetes to both of his hands and even called 911 himself reporting a man armed with a machete outside the home.

The man immediately advanced on the first officers to arrive on scene who were able to retreat to a safe distance. While waiting for back-up, the man kept trying to advance on the officers and yelled for them to shoot him.

Police were able to use a less lethal weapon to safely take the man into custody without injury.

The 34-year-old man from Winnipeg has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
