WINNIPEG - Despite having two members of their on ice leadership team out under Covid protocols, the Winnipeg Jets beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 last night at Canada Life Centre for their first victory of the year.
Earlier in the day Mark Scheifele was ruled out of the game when a second test came back positive joining the already quarantining Blake Wheeler.
Winnipeg fell behind early when Troy Terry beat Connor Hellebuyck just 2:46 in but Pierre-Luc Dubois evened the game up just 1:24 later. Hellebuyck recovered nicely as the Ducks outshot the Jets 10-4 in the first period, turned away 17 shots in the second, and stopped 12 more in the third; it was his best game so far this season. Andrew Copp scored the game winner in the second and Josh Morrissey added an insurance goal just 90 seconds into the third. Kyle Connor added an empty net goal with 2:49 left then beat Ducks goaltender John Gibson again before the game ended to send the Jets fans home happy.
Winnipeg next sees action tomorrow night at home vs. Nashville. Game time is 6pm (Citytv, SN360, Power97)
