WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets dropped their second straight game on home ice last night losing 3-2 in the shootout to the St. Louis Blues.
Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich beat the returning Connor Hellebuyck late in the first period to open the scoring. Midway through the second period Neil Pionk scored a hi-light reel type goal even things up and the two teams started the third period tied. Kyle Connor gave the Jets the lead 6:22 into the third with a goal with the assists going to Logan Stanley and Blake Wheeler (his 700th franchise point). St Louis answered back with a goal by Jordan Kyrou to tie the game. Overtime solved nothing until Ryan O’Reilly beat Hellebuyck on the Blues fourth try in the shootout.
Connor Hellebuyck looked very much like a new father who hasn’t got much sleep for most of the game only making 21 saves on the 23 shots he faces. He did wake up for the overtime period and was spectacular stopping all 10 shots he faced. Jordan Binnington made 39 saves for the Blues; he was sensational.
The Jets seven game homestand continues Thursday night when they face the San Jose Sharks at 7pm (TSN 3, 680 CJOB/Power 97). This will be the third time these two teams have faced each other this season; San Jose has won both by one goal. San Jose has also won the last three games vs. the Jets in Winnipeg.
