Man Charged With Extorting Money

WINNIPEG - Two Winnipeg men have been charged with extortion and public mischief after faking a kidnapping to extort money from one of their parents.

On February 27, 2018 police received a report that a man had been kidnapped and a video had been sent to his parents in China, demanding a large amount of money.

Police were able to locate the alleged victim of the kidnapping at a home on Arden Avenue. He was not hurt and did not appear to be under duress.

An investigation concluded that he had staged his own kidnapping to get money from his parents.

On March 1, 2018, 31 year-old Yang Xi, of Winnipeg was charged with extortion and public mischief.

It was also discovered that Xi had been working with a partner, and on March 19, 2019 they charged 24 year-old Ji Zhang with extortion and public mischief as well.

He was detained in custody.
