Suspects in Dangerous Semi-Truck Chase Charged

WINNIPEG – Two Brampton, Ontario men face a dozen charges relating to the stolen Semi-truck chase through the city on January 18.

At about 5:00 am., a truck driver left his semi-truck running as he ran into a restaurant on Brookside Boulevard. The two suspects got in and drove away. Five and a half hours later the truck driver saw his truck driving down Keewatin Street. Police located the semi as it neared the Perimeter.

They followed the truck to Main Street and Red River Boulevard where it accelerated to a high speed. Police followed at a safe distance out of concern for public safety. At Main and Carruthers the semi collided with two vehicles causing significant damage. It didn’t stop and again collided with four more vehicles including one with a two-month old baby in the back seat. The baby was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The stolen truck continued on Selkirk Avenue, driving into oncoming lanes and hit three more vehicles before the suspects lost control and collided with a a steel fence.

The suspects then jumped out of the truck and fled on foot. They were taken into custody a short time later.

30 year-old Gurpreet Singh Atwal, of Brampton, Ontario, has been charged with:

– Theft of Motor Vehicle

– Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance

– Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer

– Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited

– Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident (x8)

30 year-old Karanvir Singh Kang, of Brampton, Ontario, has been charged with:

– Theft of Motor Vehicle

Both were held in custody.
