WINNIPEG - The driver of a stolen vehicle struck an SUV with a 5 year-old child inside and dangerously ignored stop signs before police chased him down.
Police spotted the stolen vehicle at 1:00 P.M. at Chalmers Ave. and Raleigh St. and when they turned on their lights the driver drove up onto the curb and took off at high speeds.
Officers did not pursue; however, the stolen vehicle continued to drive dangerously and began to ignore stop signs in the area. At the intersection of Chalmers Avenue and Watt Street, the stolen vehicle struck an SUV containing a couple with their 5-year-old daughter causing a significant amount of damage to the vehicle.
The driver of the stolen vehicle fled on foot and officers, who had seen the collision from a distance, chased him on foot and apprehended and arrested him a short time later.
The occupants of the SUV were checked by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service but did not require medical attention.
A search of the stolen vehicle resulted in the seizure of a large knife and a .6 gram bag of methamphetamine.
The suspect was treated at a hospital for injuries from the collision and was medically cleared soon after.
20 year-old Brendan James Neufeld has been charged with:
- Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Possession of a Weapon
- Possession of Scheduled Substance – Methamphetamine
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He was detained in custody.
