Elderly Man Attacked & Robbed

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Police Service says a 72-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being pushed to the ground, violently assaulted until he was knocked unconscious, and robbed Tuesday afternoon.

Officers responded to the area of Selkirk Ave. between Salter and Charles Streets where witnesses had reported the elderly man had been kicked in the head. Police encountered a crowd of people tending to the man’s injuries, and he was taken to hospital where he remained Thursday evening.

Investigators determined the victim was walking in the area when he was assaulted by a lone suspect. Police say the suspect rummaged through the victim’s clothes once the man was unconscious, the result of being pushed and repeatedly assaulted while on the ground.

The Major Crimes Unit continued the investigation, which led them to the area of Main St. between Stella and Sutherland on Wednesday evening. There they arrested 21-year-old Jonathan Eric Joseph McKay.

McKay is facing charges of robbery and assault causing bodily harm, and remains in custody. Neither charge has been proven in court.
