WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Police say two suspects are facing multiple charges related to guns and drugs after a bust at a Sargent Park-area hotel on Valentine’s Day. The WPS says the Guns and Gangs Unit, Tactical Support Team, and officers from their West District detachment executed a search warrant at the hotel on Sunday evening, and spotted the two showing up there riding in a taxi cab.
Officers say the man and women took off in the cab when they saw police, as the male suspect started throwing things out of the cab’s windows. When police managed to stop the cab, they say the man tried to flee on foot, and hide under a truck on Strathcona St between Sargent and Ellice, but was tracked down with the help of the AIR1 police helicopter.
The items chucked out of the taxi window were found, and are alleged to have included 75 grams of fentanyl, estimated to have a $15,000 street value, and 8 grams of meth, worth around $800 on the street.
Police say a search of the cab turned several items that they seized, including:
- A .22 calibre sawed-off bolt action rifle;
- 15 rounds of .22 ammunition with a magazine;
- A can of bear spray; and
- $3,600 in cash
The 25-year-old woman was also found to be hiding 1.5 grams of meth.
She, along with the 33-year-old man, was slapped with numerous charges, including possession and careless storage of an unauthorized firearm and ammunition in a vehicle against a prohibition order; and possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody, while the woman was released on a promise to appear in court.
