WINNIPEG - The hottest team in the Canadian Football league, the 5-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, travel west to take on the Edmonton Elks tonight. The Elks (2-3) who currently sit fourth in the West Division will be without starting quarterback Trevor Harris after he was placed on the six-game injured list with a neck injury earlier this week. Quarterback Taylor Cornelius, who has never thrown a CFL pass, will make his first career CFL start against the Bombers. Cornelius will wear number 15, which was the number of Edmonton legend Ricky Ray, which no doubt will result in huge pressure for his performance.
The Bombers lineup will be almost unchanged from the Banjo Bowl, except they’ll be trying their third place-kicker of the season when American Ali Mourtada makes his CFL debut, taking over for struggling rookie Marc Liegghio. Commonwealth Stadium has historically been a tough place for the Bombers to win at, although they have won four out of their last five games in the Alberta capital.
This one won’t be close. Winnipeg’s defense will swarm the inexperienced QB causing him to make many mistakes and Zack Collaros and the offense will have another big game. The Bombers are in the middle of an eight game stretch against the West, having knocked off Calgary and then Saskatchewan twice. The quirky 2021 schedule has the Bombers playing the Lions next, then back to back games with Edmonton, then the Lions again.
Game time is 8:45pm tonight.
