WINNIPEG - Even without league leading receiver Greg Ellingson and all-star defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers remained perfect in 2022 with a 24-10 win over the Edmonton Elks last night in the Alberta capital.
Winnipeg took advantage of an early Elks error to start the scoring four minutes in. Malik Clements tipped a Taylor Cornelius pass right into the hands of Deatrick Nichols, setting up the Bombers at the Elks 26 yard line. One play later, Zach Collaros found Rasheed Bailey for the TD. Collaros completed just 7 of his 16 pass attempts for 188 yards, tossed two interceptions but most importantly, also threw touchdown passes to Rasheed Bailey and Dalton Schoen. Kicker Marc Liegghio was perfect, adding a field goal and 3 converts.
Other than the scoreboard, the Elks pretty much dominated the stats; Edmonton had 23 first downs to Winnipeg’s 12, and had possession of the ball for 37:14 to Winnipeg’s 22:46. Cornelius completed 25 of 42 passes for 270 yards.
Edmonton (2-5) remains winless at home this season and hasn't won at Commonwealth Stadium since Oct. 12, 2019. Commonwealth will next be used Tuesday when Pope Francis conducts mass as part of his tour of healing and reconciliation in regards to Canada’s residential school system for Indigenous people.
The 7-0 Bombers travel to Calgary next Saturday to take on the 4-1 Stampeders. Game time is 6pm.
