Do You Know These Two Manitobans?

WINNIPEG - When people talk about Winnipeg we always seem to hear the same things, "Coldest City in North America", "Pot Hole Capital of Canada", "home of the Winnipeg Jets - again". We never hear about the many successful daughters and sons of the city.

We want to change that with our weekly feature titled, "Do You Know These Famous Manitobans?" Every Sunday morning we will feature two people born in Winnipeg that have worked hard and made themselves a success in their choose field.

Terry Jacks

Terry was born and raised in Winnipeg. Jacks took up guitar in his teens and at 18 formed a band called The Chessmen with guitarist Guy Sobell. They had four top-ten hits in Vancouver between 1964 and 1966.

He is most known for the hit song "Seasons in the Sun". What you may not know it that song was originally intended for the Beach Boys, with Jacks serving as producer for the recording. However, after the group decided not to release it, Jacks decided to record it himself in late 1973 on his own record label, Goldfish Records, which became the largest-selling international single by a Canadian artist at that time, eventually selling 14 million copies worldwide.

Give it a listen.

Anna Paquin

Anna was born in Winnipeg in1982, to Mary (Brophy), an English teacher from Wellington, New Zealand, and Brian Paquin, a Canadian phys-ed teacher. Anna moved to her mother's native country when she was four years old.

Anna was the first millennial to have received an Academy Award nomination for acting, and the first to win.

On 1 April 1996 on the Late Show with David Letterman Dave has a man on briefly who had shot for a million dollars the night before from halfway at a basketball game but missed and offered him $10,000 to try a shorter shot on stage but he missed again. The man left and Anna walked on stage immediately and Dave who was still holding the money in his hand made the same offer to Anna who, without any prep, effortlessly made the shot. Dave handed her the money immediately and they got on with the show.

Finally, while filming the movie Amistad (1997) in Montreal during the summer, she made a side-trip to Toronto to film 5 TV commercials for MTS, take a look.
