WINNIPEG - Zebra mussels have been found in Lake Manitoba.
Nine water samples from the lake turned up juvenile mussels.
Provincial officials say this suggests there could be a breeding population of the invasive species in the lake.
As a result, mandatory watercraft decontamination is now is effect for boats and other equipment.
These mussels can affect local ecosystems and native fish populations, clog water intakes and litter beaches.
The mussels have been in Lake Winnipeg since 2013.
