WINNIPEG - A judge has recommended the Manitoba government hire a third party to review the use of segregation in the province's jails.

This follows inmate Jeffrey Tait killing himself in 2019 at Headingley Correctional Institution.

Tait's death was the subject of an inquest conducted by provincial court Judge Stacy Cawley which heard his mental health deteriorated after being held in solitary confinement for around 38 of the 88 days he was incarcerated.

He died after a 23 day stint in solitary at Headingley.
