WINNIPEG - For the first time anywhere, Manitoba is launching a health-related social impact bond to help people quit smoking.
Up to 4,500 people will register for the three year program and receive support from trained pharmacists. Each person will also get $100 in smoking cessation tools.
Shoppers Drug Mart is spending $2 million on the initiative but will get back $2.12 million from the province if expectations are met.
The success of the Quit Smoking bond will be judged by how many participants quit smoking for at least 12 months and remain non-smokers beyond 24 months.
