Province Takes Modern Approach to Economic Development

New Approach to Economic Development

WINNIPEG, MB. - A new report has been released by the Manitoba Government designed to help modernize the the province's economic development strategies.

The Framework for Economic Alignment and Growth report charts a renewed and focused path for a thriving economy, Premier Brian Pallister said. “When we formed government, we inherited an outdated and unfocused patchwork of economic development programs. It lacked co-ordination and mechanisms to measure outcomes. Under the guidance of business and industry leaders, we will establish a modern vision to address today’s challenges and unlock the untapped economic opportunities in our province.”

Deloitte LLP was contracted in October to review and report on Manitoba’s existing economic development efforts. The framework was completed under the guidance of the Premier’s Enterprise Team including entrepreneur Barb Gamey. Gamey and Dave Angus, former CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, were appointed by the premier in December to provide independent advice and recommendations on establishing a bold and modern approach to economic development.

The premier noted the Framework for Economic Alignment and Growth report made three key recommendations:

  • expand the current program review to all economic development programs delivered by the Manitoba government;
  • confirm economic development goals and objectives, and develop a provincewide strategy; and
  • consider establishing a dedicated arms’ length economic development organization.
  • “We believe that implementing these recommendations will ensure our economic development efforts are co-ordinated and strategic in focus,” said Pedersen. “We want to see improved programming and service delivery, reduced duplication, and clearly defined goals and objectives in our economic development programming.”

    The minister noted that beginning in April, the province will conduct broader engagement with business, industry and economic development agencies to help shape a new strategy.
