WINNIPEG - Manitoba Public Insurance has backed down from a plan to let some people get their driver's licence without a road test.
The reversal came three hours after board chair Ward Keith said the plan would proceed and would not compromise road safety.
MPI says it now has enough private driving instructors to fill the gap left by its striking unionized workers who walked off the job on Monday.
Under the cancelled plan, graduates of the driver education program would have been able to get a Class 5 licence and skip the road test while the strike continues.
