Military Heading North Again

WINNIPEG - The Canadian military has been deployed to Garden Hill First Nation to help the community tackle a COVID-19 outbreak there. This follows a Canadian Armed Forces liaison and reconnaissance mission by eight members to figure out what resources would be needed.

Military officials say personnel will start flying in tomorrow, and will help with cleaning and maintenance, in addition to running an Emergency Operations Centre there. They’ll also help create an isolation centre and train staff to operate it, and do wellness checks, COVID-19 testing, triaging, patient monitoring, and some treatment tasks among residents there.

Community leaders say there are over 300 cases in the isolated First Nation of just under 2,600 members. The community is over 600 km northeast of Winnipeg.
