WINNIPEG - A wildfire has forced Nearly 300 people to flee the town of Leaf Rapids for Thompson in northwestern Manitoba.

Dawn Halcrow is one of a few residents who stayed behind to watch pumps and sprinklers set up to protect Churchill River Lodge which she owns.

The province says there are 43 active fires in Manitoba including four new ones.

The total number of wildfires so far this season is 147, with the average for this time of year being 168.
