WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government has defeated an New Democratic motion aimed at protecting young athletes from sexual predators.

The new policy would have prevented coaches from having students to their homes.

The governing Conservatives say the NDP resolution lacked collaboration and the issue deserves more study and debate.

Sport minister Andrew Smith says his government is working with Sport Manitoba and others to help protect children.
