Hydro Is Granted Rate Hikes

WINNIPEG - The province's Public Utilities Board has approved two rate hikes over the next seven months.

The independent rate-setting authority has given Manitoba Hydro the green light to raise average electricity rates by 1.4 per cent on September 1st and another 1.4 per cent on April 1st.

The average customer will pay up to $65 more per year.

Hydro was hoping for two consecutive increases of two per cent each.

A Hydro spokesperson says this decision will reduce the utility's ability to address its $24 billion debt.
