Manitoba First Nation To Sue Ottawa

First Nation To Sue Ottawa

WINNIPEG - The leader of a Manitoba First Nation has proposed a national class action lawsuit against the federal government over housing conditions.

Chief Elvin Flett of St. Theresa Point First Nation says Ottawa has failed to address the housing crisis in Indigenous communities and he is seeking $5 billion in compensation.

Flett is also looking for an order to make the feds comply with their obligation to provide adequate housing on First Nations.

The community has nearly 470 families in need of homes but the government only provided funding to build less than two dozen two bedroom units last year.
