Manitoba Bisons Athletes of the Week

WINNIPEG, MB. - Many of the Manitoba Bison teams are having a great season so far, the two selected as the Athletes of the Week play a role in the teams success.

Female Athlete of the Week is Winnipeg native, Teagan Turner. The Bison track and field teams have been ranked in the latest U Sports Top 10 and Turner, Bison fourth year sprinter, has already had one of the fastest runs for the season in only the second week of January.

Turner competed at the Thundering Herd Classic hosted by NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota on Saturday, January 13 and won in the women’s 60m dash in a blazing time of 7.48 – a full 0.22 second faster than the nearest competitor.

With the winning time, Turner automatically qualified for the 2018 U SPORTS Track and Field Championship being hosted by University of Windsor from March 8-10.

In addition, Turner now holds the second fastest 60m time in U SPORTS this season (only .01 second off the top time so far in 2017-18).

Male Athlete of the Week is another Winnipeg native, Gee-ef Nkwonta. The Bison fifth year jump specialist had an impressive beginning to his final season as he posted the longest triple jump for the 2017-18 season in only the second week of January.

Nkwonta competed at the Thundering Herd Classic hosted by NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota on Saturday, January 13 and was victorious in the men’s triple jump with a winning jump of 14.82 on his fifth attempt – 14 cm ahead of the nearest competitor.

With the jump, Nkwonta automatically qualified for the 2018 U SPORTS Track and Field Championship being hosted by University of Windsor from March 8-10.

Nkwonta now holds the longest triple jump in U SPORTS this season, he is ahead of second place and teammate Oyinko Akinola by 25 cm.
