Man Pulls Knife While Stealing Bicycle

WINNIPEG - Police have arrested a 19-year-old man after he pulled a knife on a victim t steal his bicycle then chases the victim onto a bus, during which two other men steal the victims bicycle.

Thursday, just before midnight, police were called to a robbery on Colony Street.

A man had been waiting at a bus stop when he saw two men trying to remove the tire from his bicycle which had been locked up nearby. The men were unsuccessful and left the area.

The man went and checked on his bicycle, which had no damage, and began to ride away but was confronted by another male suspect who pulled a knife and threatened him. The victim, tired to defend himself, swinging his bicycle lock at the suspect and running onto a nearby bus.

The suspect followed the victim onto the bus but the driver intervened and called for police. The suspect then left the area on foot. During the melee, the victim’s bicycle was stolen by the first two men he saw.

The bus driver stayed with the victim until police arrived. Witnesses directed police to a building on Balmoral Street where they had seen the man run, still armed with the knife.

Inside the building, officers heard the occupants of a suite talking about weapons. They entered and found the suspect hiding in a bathroom. The knife that was believed to have been used during the incident was recovered and seized.

The suspect gave officers a fake name, however he was identified as Joseph Peter Hunter, a 19-year-old man from Winnipeg, and was charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Public Mischief
  • Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x2)

Hunter also had an outstanding arrest warrant for - Fail to Comply with Probation Order
