WINNIPEG - A jail inmate is recovering in hospital after the Brandon Police Service says he was punched, kicked, and beaten with furniture. The BPS says they’re investigating after they responded to a call this past weekend reporting of an inmate who was attacked by the group in custody at the Brandon Correctional Centre.
Police say the attack happened in the adult male area, and ended with the victim being taken by ambulance to the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Officials note the victim was punched and kicked, and physically assaulted with other objects the inmates could get their hands on, including furniture in the jail.
The investigation continues with the help of the major crimes unit, as well as a forensic identification team. The man remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
The medium-security Brandon Correctional Centre is a facility that can hold up to 244 men, and about eight women, as well as young offenders, for short-term stays.
