Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease On The Rise

Foot & Mouth On The Rise

WINNIPEG - There's been a sharp increase in outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease this summer.

The Manitoba Child Care Association says cases of the contagious viral infection are up 70 per cent in the last three months after hearing from 150 members through a survey.

The virus causes painful blisters in and around the mouth and on the skin but symptoms are usually mild and clear up on their own after a week or 10 days.

The province says cases requiring outpatient treatment are up after a two year dormancy linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
