Churches & COVID In Court

WINNIPEG - Seven Manitoba churches are in court battling COVID-19 public health orders.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is representing them, claiming the rules are unjustified violations of the Charter of Rights.

Tobias Tissen testified he can't force worshippers to follow the orders because it's God's jurisdiction. He's a minister at one of the churches near Steinbach.

Videos of services at the Church of God were entered in court. They show people singing and hugging without wearing face masks.

After tesifying, Tissen joined a protest outside the courthouse involving at least 100 people.

The province is arguing it has the authority to impose reasonable restrictions.

Church gatherings are currently restricted to 10 people or 25 percent capacity and everyone is required to have a mask on.
