WINNIPEG - When it comes to sports, we’re all different. We like different teams and we like to watch them different ways.
As an example, here’s how intend to watch Blue Bomber football on Friday night: In the carrels at Assiniboia Downs.
Sure it’s different, but it gives me the best of every world: The feel of Las Vegas, the ability to place a few bets, great food and drink and the opportunity to get up and watch some live racing while I’m at it.
No matter how you’re going to spend your weekend, there are plenty of things for the sports fan to do all over the province.
For most, it will start on Friday evening with the Bomber game in Montreal on TSN at 6 p.m. No matter where you watch it, this is a big early-season game for the Big Blue. Already 0-1, they have two straight road games and they don’t want to fall too far behind the eight-ball before playing at home on July 7.
However, if you’re in Winnipeg and you like your sports live, there is plenty of baseball action. Sure, the Goldeyes might be in St. Paul and don’t return to Shaw Park until Monday night, but the Manitoba Junior Baseball League is in full swing.
Here’s the schedule this weekend:
Friday, June 22: 7 p.m. Altona at St. James
Friday, June 22: 7 p.m.Elmwood at St. Boniface
Saturday, June 23: 1 p.m. Pembina Valley at Brandon (DH)
Sunday, June 24: 1 p.m. St. Boniface at Interlake (DH)
Sunday, June 24: 1 p.m. Carillon at Altona (DH)
No matter where you are in southern Manitoba this weekend, there will be a baseball game near you. In fact, there is also one Winnipeg Senior Baseball League game this Friday night as the St. James A’s face the Springfield Sr. Braves at Braves Field in Springfield.
If you like horses, Assiniboia Downs has racing Friday and Saturday night and this weekend, there are two big stakes races. On Friday night, it’s the $27,500 Chantilly Stakes for three-year-old fillies and on Saturday it’s the $27,500 Golden Boy Stakes for three-year-olds. The Golden Boy is a nice preview of the top local colts as they get set for the $75,000 Manitoba Derby in August.
If you like your sports on TV, there is plenty of Blue Jays baseball on Sportsnet as Totonto plays the Angels in Anaheim at 9:07 p.m. on Friday, 8:07 p.m. on Saturday and 3:07 p.m. on Sunday. As well, TSN has the World Cup live from Russia (check local listings) and its NHL Draft Weekend, live from Dallas on Sportsnet, both Friday and Saturday.
No matter how you take your sports, Manitoba Post will be watching the games with you this weekend.
