MANITOBA – Gimli RCMP, along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, continue to investigate a fatal collision.

Police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 9, at the intersection with 17th Avenue, just north of Sandy Hook on Friday afternoon around 1:30 pm.

RCMP have determined that a SUV, being driven by a 43-year-old woman from the RM of Gimli, was heading northbound behind another vehicle when this vehicle began to slow down. The driver of the SUV attempted to slow down as well but due to the icy roads, maneuvered her vehicle to the left to avoid a collision. Her vehicle then entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, being driven by a 61-year-old woman from the RM of Gimli.

The 61-year-old was taken to the hospital where she died due to her injuries. The 43-year-old woman driver and her 39-year-old passenger, a female, were not injured.

Gimli RCMP said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision.
